Mt. Kenya from the South

Kamweti Falls are within the Castle Forest in Kirinyaga County, south of Mt. Kenya. It is an easy-to-hike destination through a forested area, with less altitude difference from the starting point. The Mt Kenya ecosystem is an ideal hiking paradise, thanks to the clear trails and favourable weather, especially in December. You go through a moderate ascend from the hiking starting place towards Kamweti Falls. The tranquil montane forest provides a conducive hiking experience as you appreciate the beauty of nature. Maximum elevation at the waterfalls is 2,279m above sea level, which is 319m elevation gain from the starting point. The total distance from the starting point and back is approximately 13km, covered in 4 hours.

Opening up of the Mt. Kenya National Park

The journey starts from Nairobi to Castle Forest Station, about 140km northwards. After a brief exercise and meet-up with the guide, the ascend begins. The trail ventures deep into the forest, passing through bamboo trees and chilly conditions. The hike is simple and easy, ideal for a family hike. There are several species of birds and indigenous trees, which may also interest nature lovers. The deeper you go, the thicker the forest. You can easily spot elephant and rhino trails evident through their dung on the way. The climax of the trek, about 6km from the starting zone, is the majestic Kamweti falls. It is a splash from the rock climbing down a few meters. This is the time to try out for those who do not mind a forest bath. However, the chilly coldness and the cool surrounding might deter you. Kamweti waterfall provides a good backdrop for a photo as the water hits the surface. It is clear and shallow on the edges, allowing you to step in. However, you can only stay in for a short time due to the ice-cold temperatures. However, the December weather is friendlier, allowing you some latitude to enjoy this fresh water. For those going up the mountain, the area around the waterfall is usually the first stop for the night. It is one of the routes up the mountain, especially those going towards Point Lenana.

The Weather

Mt Kenya is a cold and wet climate throughout the year, with occasional sunshine, especially in December. Hikers must prepare their warm clothes and hiking gear to mitigate this weather. However, December is the best time to go to the mountain, thanks to the clear skies and humid temperatures.
