Mt. Kenya from the Southern Slopes

In the heart of Embu, just outside the Embu-Runyenjes Road, is Kirimiri Forest. It is an indigenous forest outside the Mt Kenya Forest reserve but within the ecosystem. The white rock viewpoint allows you to witness Mt Kenya’s southern slopes are the vast Embu region. You can also see the Embu-Meru Road from a distance. Nthenge Njeru is a spectacular site with a charming landscape and dense vegetation cover. It brings out the real Embu spirit with a touch of Mt. Kenya serenity. As you ascend the forest hill along the Ena River towards the main road, the roar from the waterfall and the scenic views give you a perfect backdrop for a memorable photo.

Waterfall, then up the Hill

Nthenge Njeru waterfalls is 150km from Nairobi along the Embu-Meru Road, just before Runyenjes town. The hiking starting point is near Melody Eco Lodge, proceeding to the waterfall for a snapshot and scenic viewing. The waterfall falls close to 40m from a rock along the Ena River, originating from the Mt Kenya forest.  Afterwards, proceed northwards to Mukuuri shopping centre towards Kirimiri Forest. The road goes through the village with a steady ascend for about 1 hour. Kimiriri Tea Buying centre is at the base of the hill forest with an elevation of 1.463m above sea level. Up the forest hill you go, passing through indigenous forest cover that gives the trail the natural hiking feeling. The path goes through a dense ground cover and misty trees up the forest hill.

The maximum height of the hill forest is 1,740m above sea level. A white rock at the top of the hill gives you a perfect view of the surrounding. You can see the Mt. Kenya Forest northwards, and if the sky is clear, a glimpse of the mountain top. The journey down the forest hill is simple but has dense ground vegetation and misty conditions. You also get to see various bird species, trees and insects. The hike is good for nature lovers, especially ecologists.

The Weather

The Mt Kenya region is generally cold, although September has occasional sun rays. However, you can experience light showers and chilly weather, which requires you to prepare adequately. Going up the Kirimiri forests has a cooling effect, with dense vegetation cover, which needs adequate preparations.

What to carry along

  1. Foot ware – good hiking boots are a must, thanks to the slippery ground, tough hill terrain and dense ground cover. The weather in September within the Mt Kenya region is cold and wet.
  2. Clothes –carry enough warm clothes and an extra pair to change. Consider carrying a baseball cap and a pair of gloves for direct sunlight and the cold, respectively.
  1. Hiking supplies – water for hydration is essential (at least 3 litres in refillable bottles). If possible, carry some snacks to boost the body’s sugar level.
  1. Fitness – it is a moderate hike that doesn’t need intense preparation. However, do some aerobics and body exercises to prepare the body for the challenge.
